Camping:
There are many local campgrounds near Missoula if you wish to tent camp. These will position you out of walking distance to the University and Downtown. The Rock Creek Site is 25-30 minutes by car. Due to scheduling of openings downtown, all of which potentially involve alcohol, we have decided to disallow camping at Rock Creek until Saturday 8th, at which time everyone is encouraged to pitch a tent onsite and have a great send-off party.
Consider driving distance to the university when booking a hotel. For instance, many of the hotels at the above website are under $50 but are a good 10-15 minute drive to the school and centers of activity. We recommend staying downtown or near the university, putting you in walking distance to exhibitions, panels, workshops and opportunities for refreshment.
Students have 3 affordable options:
1) Stay 4 people to a 2 bed room at the Holiday Inn below ($20 each)
2) The Hutchins Hostel is available first come, first serve, very nice ($25 each)
