WCIAC 2018 Granite City Panel Descriptions:
I Am For An Art:
In 1961, Claes Oldenburg wrote his slightly satirical Ode to Possibilities. It begins “I Am For An Art….” and goes on to declare many things; for example:
“I am for an art that takes its form from the lines of life itself, that twists and extends and accumulates and spits and drips, and is heavy and coarse and blunt and sweet and stupid as life itself.”
Oldenburg’s “I am for an Art,” though almost 50 years old is still relevant as a model to look to for inspiration today.
This presentation is intended to have a group of artists each offer a 5-minute Ode of their own. They might speak with conviction about material or process. They might speak to the motivations and ambitions of their work. They might speak a nonsensical performance – the point is that these artists will have a public forum to “Speak” and provide imagery in a brief and informal presentation.

Art & Industry “Dating Game”:
This is a panel conversation that addresses relationships between Art and Industry, well kinda. Think Speed Dating mixed with the Newlywed Game with a little Dating Game thrown in on the side. This moderated game show formatted panel puts artists and industrial manufacturers together to see what shared interests we have, where common ground exists, and to better get to know one another. There may even be the opportunity for questions from the studio audience.
Table Sessions on Career Support & Development:
Professionals representing numerous organizations that offer artist support or are resources and opportunities as well as self-employed artists will be available to approach for questions and share their knowledge and wisdom. These may include The Volunteer Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts, Graduate school programs, Public Art & Civic Engagement groups, various residencies, and galleries.
